Margaret Keane
(American, 1927–2022)
Biography
Margaret Keane is an American painter best known for her distinctive portraits of children with oversized eyes. Her former husband, Walter Keane, took credit for her work until their divorce in 1965, when she was forced to take him to court to prove she was the actual artist responsible. Keane has said that Amedeo Modigliani served as her biggest influence in how she paints the female form, and her work can be viewed as a precursor to Yoshitomo Nara’s large-eyed children and animals. Born Peggy Doris Hawkins September 15, 1927 in Nashville, TN, Keane now currently resides and works in Napa County, CA. In 2014, she was the subject of a mainstream film titled Big Eyes, which was produced and directed by Tim Burton.
